A Sad Goodbye

So its been pretty quiet around the Fudge house.

Liam has had a difficult time staying healthy the last few weeks.  It seems like everyother day he is fighting a fever.  He is clingy and cranky.

In the middle of a particularly rough stomach bug Liam was fighting, my dad passed away.  Liam and I rushed around that night and got on the first flight home in the morning.  I figured we needed to be with family and he could always go to the doctor in Michigan.   Luckly Liam was feeling better- but it caused me a trip to the hospital a few days later.

I'll be the first to say I wasn't a fan of my stepdad when he first came around, and woman will follow right behind me in telling how awful I was to him.  Oh well.  Somehow along the way he became my dad.

We in part named Liam after him.  And Rick was a very proud grandfather.  Although there was no genetic relation, he swore Liam looked just like him.  And Liam loved his gampa.

We tried our best to explain what was happening to Liam.  Starting back at Christmas we told Liam we were going to see Gamma and Gampa because Gampa was really sick.  And this past week we told him Gampa wasn't sick anymore.  But at the funeral his body was still there making it difficult for a little one to comprehend that Gampa wasn't with us anymore.  "Shhhh... Gampa's sleeping, we can't wake him up", this is what Liam would tell us.  And at the funeral he wondered why Dylan {my nephew} was crying.  I told him it was because Dylan missed Gampa, but again Gampa was right there.  Back at my mom's house, Liam told Gamma as he looked out the window "My Gampa will be right back, I promise".

Its going to take a while before Liam understands.  Its going to take a while to come to terms with this new normal.

  2. I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Dawn. I lost my dad seven years ago and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. You will get used to this new norm and each day the happy memories will crowd out a little more of the sadness.
